ABB, Inc.

On August 25, 2017, four employees of the covered entity (CE), ABB, Inc.’s health plan, were the victims of an email phishing scheme, potentially exposing the names, dates of birth, addresses, social security numbers, and insurance member identification numbers of 28,017 individuals. The CE provided breach notification to HHS, affected individuals and the media. At the time of the breach and currently, the CE trained its employees on its HIPAA policies and procedures and had a policy in place concerning suspicious emails. In response to the breach, the CE strengthened its technical security policies and procedures, and implemented additional security measures for its email system to protect against email cyberattacks. OCR obtained assurances that the CE implemented the corrective actions listed above.
