Children’s National Medical Center

The covered entity (CE), Children’s National Medical Center, reported that a laptop was stolen from an employee’s vehicle which contained the protected health information (PHI) of 722 patients. The PHI involved included names, dates of birth, diagnoses/conditions, lab results, medications prescribed, and other treatment information. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, the media, local law enforcement, and provided substitute notice. In its mitigation efforts, the CE implemented additional administrative, technical, and security safeguards to better protect its PHI. OCR obtained assurances that the CE implemented the corrective actions noted.
