Metro Presort, Inc.

Metro Presort, Inc., the business associate (BA), reported that it was the victim of a ransomware attack that affected the electronic protected health information (ePHI) of 38,387 individuals. The ePHI involved included names, dates of birth, addresses, diagnoses/conditions, and other treatment information. The BA notified HHS, affected individuals, and the media. As a result of OCR’s investigation, the BA revised its HIPAA security procedures, retrained its workforce members, and implemented additional technical safeguards to better protect its systems that maintain ePHI. OCR provided technical assistance to the BA and received assurances that the BA implemented the corrective actions noted.
