OCR description
The covered entity (CE), Atlanta Allergy and Asthma, reported that it experienced a ransomware attack that compromised the protected health information (PHI) of approximately 66,330 individuals. The PHI involved names, dates of birth, addresses, drivers’ license numbers, Social Security numbers, and financial information. The CE notified HHS, affected individuals, the media, and posted substitute breach notice on its website. Since this breach occurred, the CE implemented a variety of improved technical safeguards including additional email screening measures, improved network segmentation, new antivirus, patching, and monitoring software. OCR provided technical assistance regarding the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule.
