Does this affect you?

It affects Ubuntu linux kernel and 1 other product. Add what you run to find out whether that includes you.

CISA lists it as known exploited since Oct 20, 2022; federal agencies had to remediate by Nov 10, 2022. Treat that date as your deadline.

The overlayfs implementation in the linux kernel did not properly validate with respect to user namespaces the setting of file capabilities on files in an underlying file system. Due to the combination of unprivileged user namespaces along with a patch carried in the Ubuntu kernel to allow unprivileged overlay mounts, an attacker could use this to gain elevated privileges.

The CVE record is authoritative. Products marked “from the name” were identified from the CNA's free-text names, not a CPE, and are matched less certainly. This product uses the NVD API but is not endorsed or certified by the NVD.
